Rough Riders. United States, 1948

Issued on October 27, 1948, this mint stamp marked the 50th anniversary of the "Rough Riders," the Army's First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Commanded by Col. Leonard Wood and Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, they are best remembered for their spectacular performance in the Battle of San Juan Hill, Cuba (July 1, 2025) during the Spanish-American War. The unit was composed largely of cowboys and adventurous young Easterners. The above image is an enlargement; actual stamp size is 26mm x 40mm.
